About

Focused on empowering you to feel more emotionally grounded and confident.

Hello! I'm Dr. Miranda Denison and I am a Licensed Psychologist. I strongly believe in using methods that have been shown in empirical research to be helpful and effective. Because of that, you might find my approach interactive--I'm not just here to listen. Have you ever felt confused about where, or with what group(s), you "really belong?" Have you ever felt like you don't have strong cultural ties? Do you ever feel like you're holding all of your emotions in, only for them to burst out after a small mistake or inconvenience? If so, you're in the right place. Racial identity is an extremely nuanced area and I have extensive experience supporting individuals navigating such questions, stress, and confusion, as well as supporting individuals facing perfectionistic, high standards and self-criticism. Our sessions will be focused on you, your goals, and the changes you're wanting to see. Although I don't have a magic therapy wand to wave and fix everything, my person-centered, relatable, multicultural approach draws from cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, mindfulness, and self-compassion techniques to help individuals learn how to effectively navigate anxiety, stress, perfectionism, burnout, low self-esteem, insomnia, and more, including the impact anxiety can have on attention and concentration. Anxiety and perfectionism can be relentless, but together, we'll develop strategies to loosen their grip. I'll help you cultivate self-compassion, challenge unhelpful thoughts, and embrace imperfection. Our work will focus on your whole self, including different aspects of your identity as well as past experiences that may still be impacting you. I have specialized experience working with multiracial/mixed race adults navigating the challenges that can come along with multi-group belonging, including oppression and internalized oppression. I understand the complexities of racial identity development and the impact of systemic racism, microaggressions, and other forms of discrimination on mental health. In our sessions, we will explore how your racial identity intersects with your overall well-being and how to cope with the unique stressors and challenges that may arise with this. I am committed to providing an affirming, inclusive, safe space to discuss and learn how to navigate these challenges. Together, we will work towards understanding, healing, and empowerment. My job isn't to judge you, your experiences, or your goals; instead, my goal is to show up authentically to help you learn how to navigate the tough experience of simply being human. I strongly believe an empowering, collaborative therapeutic environment is the foundation for successful treatment as well as setting individualized goals, and when appropriate, humor can be a key ingredient, too. In case you're curious about the person you'd be meeting with: I was born and raised in the Midwest and continued to move around the Midwest for my undergraduate and graduate education. I enjoy traveling in and outside of the United States and soaking up all the information I can learn about other cultures and histories. My multicultral approach in therapy stems from my own lived experience navigating the world as a biracial woman of color, which contributes to my appreciation for diverse experiences and backgrounds. Outside of work, I enjoy reading, playing board and video games, going to soccer games (specifically, for Sporting KC) and spending time with with my family and pets (sometimes my cats like to make guest appearances during sessions). I am authorized by PSYPACT® to provide telehealth therapy services to adults across the following 42 states (APIT/E.Passport Mobility #11397; granted by PSYPACT® commission 6/22/22): Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Please note, I am not able to provide emergency services. If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, please contact emergency services by dialing 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. You can also dial or text 988, which is available 24/7, to access suicide and crisis resources. I am considered an out-of-network (OON) provider with all insurance plans. If requested, I am happy to provide you with an invoice (a superbill) for my services for you to submit for reimbursement to your insurance provider, which may reduce your out of pocket expenses. Please contact your insurance carrier for OON provider information. If you would like to meet for a brief (15 minute), free consultation to discuss your goals and see if we'd be a good fit, please feel free to schedule! I look forward to partnering with and supporting you on your journey.
